Just back from Port Stephens where once again the Southen Zone was criticised for not having  a bigger representation at the NSWGFA Interclub. I get really sick of the constant bagging of our zone and try to explain that our boats are just not that interested in the event. The fact that the fish are in our waters and it is a hell of a long way to go doesn’t work for our protagonists. I would be interested in your opinions and the reasons why you do not attend so drop me an email.

In its defence, I have to say that it is a great tournament and certainly worth the trip up even just to experience it once. Next year is the 50th anniversary so it would be wonderful to have more than the four boats we had this year. It was, however, terrific to see those that did turn up and thank you for a great effort representing your Zone.

With over 900 anglers the place is buzzing and midweek we have Ladies Day, a fun fishing day, sponsors trade day and Party in the Park.  The ladies really excelled this year with one young lady fishing for the first time on “Diversion” getting the hat trick with three Marlin…a Black, Blue and Striped.  Do you think there were some jealous men in the room? I know that Leanne Sturzenbach, fishing on “Chaos” form Batemans Bay, was thrilled to take out the champion tag and release Other Game Fish trophy.

Our own SZ Interclub is being run on the 19-20 March and the entry fee is only $20.00.  I hope that we can get boats from all the clubs in the Zone so that it is a real zonal challenge.  As everyone can fish out of his or her own port there really is no excuse for not joining in and flying your club colours. Entry forms have been sent to all the club secretaries so please promote this event. Note that entries MUST be received by 18 March.

Only a few clubs bothered to send in junior nominations this year which was disappointing.  However from those submitted, Brad Read from Canberra was chosen as the Southern Zone representative on the NSWGFA Junior Team and joins juniors from the other zones.  They will be fishing the Canberra Yellowfin Tournament in May at Bermagui on “Aspro” with GFAA President Grahame Williams as their mentor and chaperone.

As I write this Merimbula is having its Broadbill Tournament so I hope it has been well attended. Then there is the Shoalhaven Open towards the end of the month. Coming up in April is the Eden Invitational Tournament and I am doing the radio again for this one. Every tournament plays an important part in the financial viability of the host club so please try and support as many as possible.  I know quite a few people who support those clubs that support them so it is a reciprocal thing and well worth the effort establishing a good rapport between clubs in the Zone.

Some of our members are heading off to Exmouth, WA for the AIBT and I wish them well.

Finally it has been brought to my attention that the dates for May are incorrect in our calendar.  As they are the 2nd and 4th full weekends the dates should be 14-15 May and 28-29 May. Thank you to the anonymous member who noticed this error.

Stay safe and enjoy your fishing.

Sanchia
